Sweeteners: Safety & Culinary Applications
Low- and no-calorie sweeteners are safe – ample research supports this. However, not all low- and no-calorie sweeteners are created the same way. All are great for sweetening beverages, but only some are good for cooking and baking. Amy discusses the research on safety, addresses the “study of the day” and shares practical tips for using sweeteners in beverages, in cooking and in baking.
Diabetes is part of my life, but it doesn’t rule my life. Low calorie sweeteners are one of the tools that help me manage my diabetes along with stress management, daily movement that’s fun for me, the fact that I enjoy cooking, and very supportive family and friends.” – Amy Myrdal Miller
Scientists, health professionals and leading diabetes organizations all support the use of low- and no-calorie sweeteners in moderation as part of a nutrient-rich eating plan for those living with diabetes.
Added sugars are a source of carbohydrate in the diet. Using low- and no-calorie sweeteners in place of sugar is a safe and easy way to reduce carbohydrate intake and therefore can help people with diabetes manage blood glucose levels and weight. Substituting sweeteners for sugars also allows for more flexibility and food preferences.

Low calorie sweeteners provide options for people with diabetes. Do you have to use them? No. But doing so gives you the opportunity to ‘spend your carbohydrates’ in other ways.” – Amy Myrdal Miller
